In Puglia ten beaches with top marks by Flavia Pankiewicz
P
uglia is declared a region of idyllic beaches and rocky coves thanks also to “Blue Flags 2014”, the prestigious International award assigned by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) that certifies the environmental qualities of seaside resorts.
There are ten “Blue Flag” resorts this year. Two in the Bari area: Polignano a Mare and Monopoli (Lido Rosso, Castel S. Stefano, Capitolo). One in the BAT, the new entry Margherita di Savoia (Centro Urbano Canna, Fesca). Two in the province of Brindisi: Fasano and Ostuni. Four in the province of Lecce: Otranto, Castro, Salve and Melendugno and, in the province of Taranto, Marina di Ginosa.
Only the resorts whose waters are excellent can be taken into consideration. Just a few of the strict criteria of evaluation are: the depuration of refluent waters and the sewage system and the management of waste (re-cycling of trash, etc.). Traffic systems planning, beach safety and amenities (lifeguards, wheelchair and disabile access, etc.). The aim is to encourage sustainable development at seaside resorts. A model that should be the manual for the whole of Puglia, with its almost 800 kilometers of magnificent coastline, splendid olive groves, the little white towns, the wonderful, unique trulli, the quiet, sun-soaked fortified masserie (farmhouses), the magic of the Baroque, the clean lines of the Romanesque and the majesty of Castel del Monte. A landscape and natural heritage to safeguard and conserve steadfastly against all possible speculation and pollution. And a historical and artistic legacy to appreciate and protect from falling into disrepair.
The ten “Blue Flags” dotted along the Puglia coastline are the final seal on the warm invitation to spend your summer holidays in Puglia, maybe on a tour that takes in all the award-winning resorts. Amongst the myriad shades of blue and green of the Adriatic and Ionian seas to choose your own number one resort.
