2013, the Year of Italian Culture in the United States by Flavia Pankiewicz

his new year has started with the best omens, at least as regards the relations between Italy and the US.
In fact, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared 2013 as the Year of Italian Culture in the United States. The chosen subject is “Research, Discovery and Innovation”. Italian culture and identity will be promoted extensively in the most different sectors: Art, Music, Theater, Architectural and Landscape Heritage, Cinema, Literature, Science, Design, Fashion, Juridical Economic and Political Culture, and Food Culture. The program already includes an interesting schedule of events in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia and many others. It is an extraordinary opportunity for Italian companies and institutions which intend to strengthen their links with the States.

There will also be a conference dedicated to the Apulian historian Gaetano Salvemini, one of the greatest protagonists of Italy’s political and cultural life in the first half of the 20th century. It will be held in Massachusetts, at the prestigious Harvard University.
Another striking piece of news, which confirms the good feelings not only between the US and Italy, but in particular with Puglia, comes from the Wine Enthusiast Magazine, a much renowned American food and wine magazine which has recently proclaimed the “10 Best Wine Travel Destinations in 2013”. Puglia is one of these and is the only Italian region to have been included in this year's Top Ten destinations. This is a very important acknowledgment, if one considers that in Italy, as far as wine is concerned, there are regions that are very famous for wine-making and have been known throughout the world much longer than Puglia. Once again wine and food confirm themselves as flywheels which could increase high-quality tourism in Puglia, a region where deseasonalized tourism could become precious through eno-gastronomic tourism, which should naturally expand in less chaotic months than the summer ones.
Thousands of different links continue to develop between the two shores of the Atlantic, the “bridge” grows and with our presence on the Web we shall continue to give our full support to it.
