Bridge Puglia USA has collected the testimony of Laura Giannini, a young violinist from Bari, who tells of her exciting experience in the world of music in the Big Apple.


“I am very glad to share my American experience of music and life with the Apulian readers keen on culture and art. Let me just say something about my origins: I was born in Bari, the Apulian capital and the city that for me is a familiar place and a constant source of artistic inspiration. The historic theaters, the Petruzzelli, Piccinni and Margherita, the ancient Conservatorium building, the urban landscape and the natural setting, the stunning Adriatic coast, all this is an amazing fusion of history and nature. Wherever there is history there is also the culture of the past, with the traces and works of great Masters like Giovanni Paisiello, Saverio Mercadante, Niccolò Piccinni and Nino Rota. My passion for music was born right in this setting, when at the age of six I chose the violin, which then became my profession. After studying and working in Italy and Germany I decided to take a new direction in my artistic journey, looking outside Europe, to New York City, which for me has always been the metropolis where artists from all over the world meet and work together.

Working as a violinist in NYC is a stimulating professional experience, competitive in a constructive way. In a very short time, this place has enabled me to meet and play with musicians of international standing like Mark Peskanov, Alexander Markov, Daniel Phillips, Giora Schmidt and many others, and to perform in prestigious concert halls including the David Geffen Hall at the Lincoln Center, the home of the New York Philharmonic, as well as the famous Carnegie Hall. I had often heard of NYC as the “city that never sleeps” and since I came to live here, I can only confirm it. I was looking for an active environment for highly creative, motivated international artists who want to perform as much as possible, and here I am where that is actually possible! Sure, you need a great deal of energy, but when you see the chance to put your ideas into practice and to improve continuously, as any dedicated artist should, out of a pleasant sense of duty towards yourself and then towards the public, then the inner strength is automatically there. And as well as practicing your instrument every day, which is essential for a performer, I must add the constant pursuit of contact with other local musicians. That’s possible by attending concerts, cultural events, exhibitions, all sorts of gatherings and the so-called “jam sessions” that are already very popular in jazz, and that are also very common here in NYC in the classical context where they’re called “chamber music readings”: musicians make a date to read pieces of chamber music and that triggers collaborations and projects. Besides performing, I regularly teach. I have a room at two private schools, one in Long Island and one in the Upper East Side in Manhattan. The interesting thing about teaching the violin here in America is the chance to come into direct contact with other methods that are different from the one I grew up with. In particular, I’m referring to the Suzuki Method which is very popular here, especially for introducing the violin to very young children. Every day I have the opportunity to work with young people of all ages and children that are sometimes under four, and it’s really interesting to be able to watch them and to try out learning methods with them. My future plans, as well as continuing with concerts, are to open my own private studio as a teacher, and to record a CD exploring jazz sounds with some friends who are jazz musicians, thus embracing my passion for this genre, of which NYC is the homeland.”
