Former academic Salvatore Guglielmino is a polyhedric personality who has held various important roles in public and private life and has published his writings on several subjects. 

The plot of his first novel, …ed il “sole” è risorto trionfante (published by Albatros, 145 pages), reminds us of what happens in the real life of many people who, from one moment to the next, see themselves plunge from wealth to hardship because of the superficiality or incompetence with which they face the problems that crop up, or because, at times, they are reckless in money matters. And as the old saying has it, “A mother can maintain ten children, but ten children can’t maintain their mother”, and this happens so often in society. 

In the novel there are a lot of memorable characters, starting with that of the male protagonist, Calisto, who, by means of his charisma, pragmatism and eye to the long term, manages to straighten out all the negative circumstances of his life, from economic troubles to relationship problems. And we must remember that he manages to keep his family together to the end. 

The farcical manner in which Calisto is gradually introduced into the business his mother is such an expert in is remarkable and creates the opportunity for the lucky incident that sees the second protagonist, Adalgise, coming into her own. The young couple, who, in the meantime have achieved their dream of marriage, would like a large family, but unfortunately of their eight children, only half of them will stay in the original family nucleus.  

The almost theatrical way in which the Belisario-Noham couple, who have reached crisis point for economic reasons, win back their family unity by means of a brief but moving and synthetic dialogue that succeeds in bringing together two distinct worlds, that of Christianity and that of Judaism, is outstanding. In the long diatribe we notice the dual aspect of the population of the North, usually more privileged, and that of the South. Noham boasts that she belongs to a tribe that resided in the North of the country and that she had achieved all she wanted in life. Undertones in the dialogue indicate the insinuating presence of race hatred between Jews and Christians, but the author bypasses it without emphasis. 

The novel is at its most winning when we come up against the description of the meeting between Litorufo and Liberty in an airport. The little entr’acte that the two young people put on draws generous and genuine applause from all the travelers present in the airport lounge.
